In time, people became so unnerved by Drakken's unchanging age that he gained the moniker "Drakken Joe Zombie". Eventually, Drakken succeeded in acquiring a life-support device with such a function, extending his life for centuries however, he became disillusioned with his childhood desire for friendship, and instead became purely obsessed with power and survival. After being shunned by the other children for this line of thought, Drakken discovered a book about alchemy that inspired him to convert others' life force into his own, eventually learning the Alchemist form of Ether Gear. During his childhood, Drakken learned about humans from other planets that could live for decades, which led him to question the purpose of his short lifespan and, ultimately, desire to grow into adulthood and make new friends. Sadly, his obsession with living and transformation into an Ether Gear user corrupted him and he soon became little more then a coward desperately looking for immortality.ĭrakken Joe was born prior to X292 on a planet where humans were bred as experimental guinea pigs with a maximum lifespan of 15 years. However, Drakken was not always like this, as a child, he was kindhearted person who just wanted to make friends, much like how Shiki does, but could not do due his short lifespan and isolation. Drakken Joe can be quite sadistic at times, such as ordering Fie to cut off Weisz Steiner's arm and laughing as he screamed in pain. One thing Joe cannot stand is his reputation being dragged through the mud, as he makes his living off of it, and doing so enrages him to the point where he had Seth kill Spider on the spot for using it after he lost to the Crew of Edens.
Joe seems to be somewhat forgetful as he did not remember who Spider was despite telling him that they were brothers after he fixed his computer in the past. However, he is willing to let a person who can not pay him back live, solely so he can force them to earn more money for him by doing grueling types of jobs. Joe has shown that he will go as far as torturing and maiming someone for not returning the money he has loaned to them. He believes money is the most important thing in the cosmos and is only interested in making more of it at the expense of the people who are debt slaves to him. Mikey knows that Draken is the “firm” ground that Tokyo Manji Gang stands on and without him, it will crumble and even Mikey would be lost.Drakken Joe is shown to be a violent and greedy person. When Mikey meets Draken, he calls him “Ken-chin” and this truly takes on a different meaning when you really get to know Draken. That’s why he’s called Draken (Dra (Ryu) + Ken), literally meaning “firm/hard dragon”. Draken’s name is a combination of his actual name Ryuguji Ken, where Ryu means dragon.
If the Tokyo Manji Gang loses him, they will truly become delinquents who have no hearts, people who kill and torment people just because they want to. He is the one not only keeping everyone in check but also taking care of everyone. This is why Draken’s death had to be prevented as it plays a huge role in the anime. He was thinking ahead to see how he can relieve the burden of the grieving parents. While Mikey wanted to explain that it wasn’t their fault, Draken simply understood the pain that the parents were going through and decided to take the blame. This is illustrated when Mikey and Draken meet the parents of the girl who was raped by Moebius.
That’s how the two complement each other. While Mikey strives to think about justice and logic, Draken thinks about the heart behind everything. This is the difference between Draken and Mikey. But Draken, despite having a terrible childhood, didn’t choose to give in to the darkness. When Mikey lost his brother to Kazutora, he was close to being enveloped by the darkness. Such an early experience would taint anyone’s heart but Draken was different. Abandoned by his mother from an early age, he grew up in a brothel in Shibuya.
